Pulev vs Dinu results: Dadashev, van Heerden, others win prelim fights

David Kaminsky UD-4 Estevan Payan

Scores were 40-36 across the board. Kaminsky (4-0, 2 KO) is an 18-year-old middleweight prospect originally from Israel, now fighting out of California. Payan (1-7-1, 1 KO) is twice Kaminsky’s age, and has also had a pretty long career in lower-level MMA, going 17-12 in the cage. He’s a tough dude, and he gave Kaminsky a valuable four-round experience here.

Maxim Dadashev KO-4 Ricky Sismundo

Dadashev (13-0, 11 KO) is a highly-regarded 140-pound prospect, and Sismundo (35-13-3, 17 KO) has been around the block a time or two. The Filipino journeyman dropped Dadashev late in the second round on a straight left, but Dadashev roared back and scored a brutal knockdown in the final minute of the fourth, coupling up a wicked left hook an an exclamation point right hand that put Sismundo on the canvas. The vet tried to get up, but was counted out. It’s a fine win for Dadashev, but that said, he’s 28, and he’s now beaten Abdiel Ramirez, Darleys Perez, Antonio DeMarco, and Sismundo in his last four. I think we can all agree it might be time to take an actual step up from this level.

Tervel Pulev UD-6 Mitch Williams

The cruiserweight Pulev (13-0, 11 KO) is Kubrat’s younger brother, but he’s also 36 years old, so he’s not what anyone would call a prospect. He also wasn’t really impressive in this one, winning on scores of 57-56, 57-56, and 59-54 in a fight where the well-traveled Williams (16-8-3, 11 KO) had his share of success. Pulev lost a point for repeatedly hitting on the break, and his left shoulder looked weird, possibly indicating a dislocation or other injury.

Javier Molina UD-8 Abdiel Ramirez

Scores were 78-74, 78-74, and 79-73. Molina (19-2, 8 KO) has been a pro for 10 years now, starting as a welterweight prospect, but he lost to Artemio Reyes in 2011 and Jamal James in 2016, sat out 2017, and returned last year as a junior welterweight. He’s now won two in a row as a 140-pounder. At 29, Molina pretty much just is who he is. Ramirez (24-4-1, 22 KO) made this a fight, and it was probably a bit more competitive than the scores reflected.

Chris van Heerden TD-6 Mahonry Montes

Scores were 60-54 across the board, with the fight halted midway through the sixth round thanks to a cut on van Heerden caused by a clash of heads. van Heerden, 31, is a South African southpaw who’s been around for a while and is now with Top Rank, who don’t have any big name welterweights for Terence Crawford to fight, so they appear to be trying to fill a boat of potential challengers with guys like van Heerden and Luis Collazo. van Heerden (27-2-1, 12 KO) is a solid pro fighter, but absolutely no challenge for Crawford on paper; he was smoked back in 2015 by a rising Errol Spence Jr, and his best wins have come over guys on the level of Matthew Hatton and Steve Claggett. Montes falls to 35-9-1 (24 KO).

Erick De Leon TKO-7 Jose Luis Gallegos

De Leon (19-0-1, 11 KO) had to come off the canvas in round five, the second straight fight where he’s been dropped, after Adrian Yung put him down in the first round last July. The 27-year-old De Leon came back to widely outpoint Yung, and came back here to stop Gallegos (16-6, 12 KO). It’s hard to know what to really make of De Leon, who was lucky to receive a draw two fights ago against Andy Vences.
