Purses: Broner $1M, Granados $250K

By Jim Dower: The purses are a little lopsided in favor of former four division world champion Adrien Broner for his fight tonight against Adrian Granados at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) will be receiving a purse of $1 million compared to just $250,000 for Granados (18-4-2, 12 KOs), according to Dan Rafael.

The million purse for the 27-year-old Broner isn’t what many in the boxing world thought he would be making at this point in his career. Years earlier before Broner was beaten by Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter, he was seen as a future pay-per-view star, and a fighter that would someday take over for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to carry the sport on his back.

Tonight, Broner be just trying to keep his career alive in the Granados fight. Broner has his back against the wall to where he can’t take another loss without it really dropping him off the map.

The Broner vs. Granado fight was supposed to take place at a catch-weight of 142lbs, but the weight was bumped up to 147lbs. That came from a request from Broner’s team. It good news that Broner made the 147lb limit for the fight. He weighed in at 146 ½ pounds at Friday’s weigh-in.

It’s unfortunate that the weight needed to be increased from the contract weight of 142lbs. Granados agreed to the weight increase because saying no would have resulted in him not getting the fight, and he wanted to face Broner and prove that he can beat him. The fact that Broner couldn’t make the 142lb limit is not a good omen for his career.

This is his second straight fight that he wasn’t at 140. He still wants to campaign in that weight division, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to be able to be counted on to make the weight on a consistent basis. If Broner has to move up in weight to fight at 147, it could be career over for him as far as him being a major player in that weight class.

Broner is still making decent money because he’s a household name in boxing for winning four division world titles. He’s the A-side for the Granados fight.

Granados is going to be looking to pull off a big upset tonight against Broner. Granados beat the highly hyped Amir Imam by an 8th round knockout in 2015. Few boxing fans believed that Granados would beat Imam, but he went out and proved all of them wrong by stopping him. It’s hard to predict what you’re going to get out of Broner each time he fights. He’s only looked good in his recent fights with his opposition being down-scaled to beatable fighters in 35-year-old Ashley Theophane and Khabib Allakhverdiev.

The purses for the co-feature bout have WBA welterweight champion David Avaneysan receiving a purse of just $75,000 for his defense against Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs). Peterson will be receiving $250,000 despite him being cha challenger. Peterson is the favorite to win tonight, but you never know.

Light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne (18-0, 13 KOs) will be receiving a purse of $60,000 for his fight against former world title challenger Thomas Williams Jr. (20-2, 14 KOs). Williams’ purse for the fight is $35,000.
