Punches and time flies!
On August 8, 1992, at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, Oscar De La Hoya, aged a tender 19, won the gold medal in the lightweight division.
Inspired by a promise he made to his Mother before she passed away, following a so brave battle against cancer, Oscar made it to the finals of the tournament and defeated German Marco Rudolph to become the Golden Boy.
What happened that fabled afternoon in Barcelona marked the beginning of a Mexican/ American legend.
Oscar’s celebration is as remembered and admired as a cross border triumph of two great neighboring nations, as he walk into the ring with the flags of Mexico and the USA, plus that famous smile!
The World Boxing Council congratulates Oscar de la Hoya 25 years after this wonderful event and tremendous achievement, that marked the beginning of an all-time great boxing career, in which he won 6 world crowns in different divisions, then becoming the very successful promoter he is today.
