Quijano predicts KO on Telemundo Friday

BOXING NEWS-By Fightnews.com

The popular boxing rivalry of Mexico vs Puerto Rico will continue on this Friday. Former world title challenger and WBO Latin super flyweight interim champion David “Gabo” Quijano (16-5-1, 9 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico challenges the full champion Ricardo “Meserito” Rodriguez (13-3, 4 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico. The 10 round main event bout will be the “Boxeo TELEMUNDO Ford” Summer Season opening show at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, Florida.

Quijano opened some viewers’ eyes on the network when he upset local favorite Daniel Lozano by decision in his last fight at the very same venue. Quijano is currently ranked #14 by the WBO and Rodriguez is #15. Quijano plans to literally take matters into his own hands as he feels that he will win inside the distance.

How has your training camp been in preparation for your upcoming fight?

In all reality, I’ve been training for the last 6 months. I took time off for the holidays but I was right back in the gym shortly afterwards.

You have been fighting at the same weight for nearly a decade. Are there any difficulties for you now to make weight?

Not at all. I have always taken my conditioning very serious and that has not changed. I am under the maximum weight limit right now by a pound. We still have a few days before the fight and I’m eating normal and maintaining my weight just fine.

How big of a victory was your last over Lozano?

It was huge. I defeated a tough fighter in his hometown and by decision. That’s not easy to do. I also got myself back into world title contention.

Have you seen your opponent Rodriguez fight?

Yes I have. He’s a very solid fighter but his style is one I feel I can handle.

Do you feel that your the puncher in this fight?

I know I am. I also believe I’ll stop him by round six at the very latest.

What kind of fight should the fans expect?

The Mexico versus Puerto Rico boxing rivalry seems to consistently produce some of the most exciting fights in boxing. Our fight will be no exception.

Also on the card undefeated 21-year-old welterweight prospect “Hurricane” Sammy Valentin (6-0, 5 KOs) of Tampa, who recently inked with All Star Boxing and stopped veteran Cosme Rivera in March. His opponent and the rest of the show will be announced shortly.

6 more fights are scheduled. Doors open 7:30 PM, First bell at 8:00 PM. Telemundo Network will televise the main event at 11:35 PM EST live. Tables and Tickets are on sale or by calling 813-454-7800.

The Boxeo Telemundo Ford Summer Series will run for 4 consecutive Fridays, July 1st and July 8 from Mexico City and will end July 15 at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
