Ray Borg sued by former management team for contract breach, fraud, and ‘revealing trade secrets’

After having a glass shard in his eye from Conor McGregor’s UFC 223 media ruckus and having his newborn son undergo two brain surgeries, Ray Borg is facing yet another hurdle. This time, he is being slapped with a lawsuit by his former management team, Wild Bunch Management.

According to a report by MMA Fighting, the suit was filed by Tom Vaughn of Fit NHB team, the gym that also runs Wild Bunch. The team is alleging that after they negotiated Borg’s five-fight contract with the UFC, Borg “unexpectedly cut ties” with both parties after the first fight on the said deal “without notice.”

Wild Bunch also claims that Borg had a three-year contract with them for management, training, promotion, and arranging for fights. In addition, they also claimed that Borg promised to pay 20 percent of his fight earnings, which amounted to $9,999, as well as ten percent from any bonuses that exceed $10,000.

The management team is now asking for a cut from the four fights on Borg’s deal, citing fraud and contract breach, and alleging that the fighter violated a non-compete clause by moving to the Jackson-Winkeljohn Academy in 2016. Specifically, the clause reportedly states that Borg is not allowed to be a martial arts instructor within a 50-mile radius of his former team Fit NHB until a year after the termination of his contract.

Wild Bunch is also seeking “actual, incidental, consequential and punitive damages” from the fighter, along with double the damages for “revealing the company’s trade secrets.”

From their end, Borg’s team will be disputing these claims.

“I think what’s going on is Ray switched gyms, he wanted to be successful,” Borg’s attorney Jason Bowles told MMA Fighting in a separate statement. “He did become successful. And they don’t have a claim to that income, based on his trying to better himself. I know they want the money. That gym doesn’t do as well as JacksonWink, so they’re gonna want to take from fighters that do pretty well.”

“I don’t see a claim,” Bowles added. “I see a reach with this one. I don’t think there was a solid contract like they’re saying. But we’re gonna have to vet that out.”

Borg recently pulled out of his scheduled fight against Brandon Moreno at UFC Chile on May 19^th to spend more time to take care of his ailing son.
