Ray Moylette vows to savour big night

‘Put the kettle on’

That may just be Ray Moylette‘s response to the obligatory ‘what’s next?’ question if he beats Christian Uruzquieta in Mayo tomorrow night.

‘Sugar Ray’ has the perfect opportunity to take his career to the next level, live on TV and in front of his home crowd this weekend.

Victory in the WBC lightweight rankings title fight versus Christian Uruzquieta at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar could see him earn and high ranking and will certainly set up a massive 2019 for Moylette [11(4)-0].

However, the Mayo man isn’t keen to look beyond his upcoming fight and not just because the Mexican represents the toughest test of his career.

The Paschal Collins-trained fighter has admitted to Irish-Boxing.com that he has never took time to enjoy his big boxing successes and is adamant that won’t be the case this time around.

The local hero, who tipped the scales at 134.7lbs to Uruzquieta’s 134.9lbs today, is going to savour the build up, the reception of a sold-out venue, and the success if it comes.

“I should enjoy this. This is a massive night and occasion for me. Now I can’t say the biggest because I got married last year, but it is right up there. So I need to be able to enjoy it. There is pressure on it but the rewards are endless,” claimed the European Elite Championships and World Youth Championships gold medallist.

“Anything I won before I always thought whats next. I never really appreciated or savored any moment. Things have passed me by. I talk to people and they say ‘you were world champion’ and I say ‘yes, but I didn’t do this’ or ‘I should have went on to do that’. I never took on board what happened in the past.”

“This will be different I will win it and savour the moment,” promised the confident Islandeady native – before warning against overconfidence.

Moylette noted how “I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch. I want to win the belt, get my name out there on TG4.”

“I am aware my name will move up the world rankings, but all I want to do it put the belt on the mantlepiece, put the feet up, have a cup of tea and look at it.”

Something Moylette seems to be enjoying in the build-up is the fact he is topping a card that includes many of his gym-mates, with Niall O’Connor, Craig O’Brien, and Owen Duffy also featuring along with Celtic Warriors regular Aaron Gethins.

Then, of course, there is Spike O’Sullivan and Moylette jokes that he is making sure his world-ranked gym-mate knows who the star is on Friday.

“I was slagging Spike about how the last time he was on the undercard was Canelo and GGG, the biggest fight ever, and now he is on a real star’s show!”

“Then again, I’ll only make about half what they did,” added the fighter who has sold over 800 tickets personally for the fight.
