Results from Mandaue, Cebu: Aguelo Stops Betos, Dignos Brutalizes Flores

By Carlos Costa

Veteran lightweight Adones Aguelo (31-19-2, 19 KO’s) of Maasin, Southern Leyte, scored a stoppage win over journeyman Richard Betos (20-24-2, 7 KO’s) of Siargao on Saturday, April 27, at the Cabahug Basketball Court in Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, Cebu, when Betos did not come out from his corner for the action of round three.

From the getgo, the well-traveled Aguelo proved to be the superior fighter landing damaging blows over the less-skilled Betos who did not have weapons to counter-attack the advancing pressure of the aggressive coming-forward Aguelo.   The pattern went on till Betos’ surrender.

The victory brings the 30-year-old Aguelo back to the winning column after consecutive losses by points in China and Russia.   Now the warrior from the Singwancha Team feels ready for more challenging missions.

In the co-main event, 23-year-old super bantamweight Melmark Dignos (9-3, 1 KO) of Lapu Lapu ravaged brave 38-year-old veteran Rogen Flores (14-46-6, 7 KO’s) of Mandaue for a tough TKO win in chapter two.

The younger Dignos, a man not recognized for heavy hands, was able to solidly rock Flores during the action of round two, sending him twice to the canvas in violent fashion, forcing watchful third man Nic Banal to halt actions, waiving the fight off.    Official time of stoppage was 2:46 in the second stanza.

In a supportive bout, laser-sharp Michael Adolfo (1-0, 0 KO’s) of the RWS/Singwancha Team decisioned tough Ryan Gallas (0-1, 0 KO’s) of Surigao del Norte.    The battle was a four-stanza symphony of leather in the flyweight division.

In the quickest fight of the entertaining evening, fast ‘n furious rookie fighter John Paul Gabonillas (1-0, 1 KO) of the RWS/Singwancha Team entered with success into pro boxing by ravaging in less than three minutes fellow debutant Argelo Samson (0-1, 0 KO’s) of Surigao del Norte for a TKO triumph in chapter one.   The collision was in the minimumweight division.   Official time was 2:15.

The cool card Saturday, April 27, at the Cabahug Basketball Court in Barangay Looc in Mandaue City was organized by Mandaue’s most charming boxing couple: Brix and Joy Flores.

Sponsors for the event were Jack Hall, VSG Australia, Happen Stance, Team Seva, the Cabahug Family, Flores Boxing Gym, Rex Wakee Salud and the Naris Singwancha Foundation.

Fights were sanctioned by the Philippines Games and Amusement Board, supervised by GAB Cebu OIC Madame Arlene Olondriz.   Ring doc was the legendary Dr. Jose Unabia.   The third men on top of the ring were Tony Pesons and Nic Banal.   Ring announcer was Cebu radio personality John Magat.
