Rey Loreto ripe and ready for the big stage

By Sports Illustrated Philippines

Rey Loreto, who recently vacated the International Boxing Organization, is eyeing the championship titles in World Boxing Council or the World Boxing Association.

Loreto, fighting out of Highland Boxing Promotion under Brico Santig, will try to make his way from no. 2 ranking in the WBC where the lightflyweight crown is currently held by Ganigan Lopez of Mexico and compatriot Pedro Guevara is the no. 1 challenger.

In the WBA, the current minimumweight titlist is Knockout CP Freshmart of Thailand, who will make his first voluntary defense in in October or November.

“We’ll wait for our turn to have the no. 1 contender, who is Loreto, to make the mandatory challenge,” said Santig.

May nag-offer na to promote Loreto and Freshmart for the championship kung mareretain niya ang crown. So we will have Loreto ready anytime. Wala nang makalaban si Loreto sa mas mababang level na boxing, talagang doon na siya sa mga elite dapat lumaban.”

“Whatever happens naman sa WBC, we have an inside track dahil nasa no. 2 naman si Loreto.

Loreto, who has not lost since 2013, is riding high on a seven-win streak, including two victories over South African legend Joyi Nkosinathi.

Loreto first met Joyi in February, winning a third-round stoppage in their scheduled 12-round bout for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightflyweight crown in Monaco.

They had their rematch in March 2015 and Loreto affirmed his domination by knocking out the former world champion in the first round right in his home turf in South Africa.
