Rey Vargas successfully defended his WBA super bantamweight title tonight on DAZN, outpointing Franklin Manzanilla over 12 rounds of action. The three official judges turned in identical scores of 117-108 for Vargas. BLH scored it 116-109 for Vargas.
Vargas (33-0, 22 KOs) came into this fight concerned about Manzanilla’s roughhouse tactics, and that proved to be a justifiable concern with Vargas sustaining three different cuts from head clashes, and Manzanilla (18-5, 17 KOs) taking two point deductions for hitting on the break.
Vargas started this fight trying to use his height and reach advantage but Manzanilla’s awkward and bull rushing style made it difficult for Vargas, and in the second round Manzanilla even scored a flash knockdown on a clean left hook that Vargas never say coming. From that point on Vargas was mostly in control of the clean action, but that didn’t stop Manzanilla for making it as rough as he could for the remainder of the fight.
Final CompuBox stats had Vargas landing 207 of 719 total punches (28.8%) while Manzanilla landed 93 of 581 total punches (16%).
