One of the toughest and most durable welterweights in the sport of mixed martial arts is calling it a career.
Rick Story announced over social media Thursday that he’s stepping away from the sport, retiring with a record of 21-10.
Story is best remembered for his early run in the UFC in 2009-10. After dropping his UFC debut via decision to John Hathaway, Story rattled off six consecutive victories, the last two being significant wins over Johny Hendricks and Thiago Alves. While he never quite reached those heights again, he did put together three straight wins from 2014-16. A loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC 202 ended his UFC tenure at 12-6.
The fighter nicknamed “The Horror” then moved on to the PFL, and proved he still had gas left in the tank, as he won both of his regular-season fights to qualify for the welterweight playoffs. But he lost via TKO to Handesson Ferreira in the quarterfinals at PFL 10, which stands as his final career bout.
