We saw another gold medal awarded, and it was definitely awarded, not won.
Day 10 of boxing in Rio closed out with a disgraceful decision. Here’s all that went down.
Women’s lightweight (60kg) – Quarterfinals
Anastasia Beliakova (Russia) def. Mikaela Mayer (United States)
This was a split decision that really could have gone either way. It was a really good effort from both, and they left it all in the ring. It’s a tough loss for Mayer, but no controversy here.
Estelle Mossely (France) def. Irma Testa (Italy)
Pretty dominant performance for Mossely, who won this fight handily. Irma Testa is an 18 year old fighter, while Mossely won the AIBA World Championships in May, so it was what it was. Good effort from Testa, though, and in four years, who knows? Mossely won the world championship by beating Beliakova in the final, so their semifinal fight is a GRUDGE MATCH.
Men’s flyweight (52kg) – Round of 16
- Misha Aloyan (Russia) def. Elie Konki (France)
- Ceiber Ávila (Colombia) def. Elias Emigdio (México) vs Ceiber Avila (Colombia)
- Jinguan Hu (China) def. Narek Abgaryan (Armenia)
- Yosvany Veitía (Cuba) def. Achraf Kharroubi (Morocco)
Men’s welterweight (69kg) – Semifinal
Daniyar Yeleussinov (Kazakhstan) def. Souleymane Cissokho (France)
Yeleussinov was boxing extremely well when this fight was stopped midway through the second on a cut over his left eye, which came from an accidental clash of heads. There is some question as to whether or not Yeleussinov will even be able to fight for the gold medal now. That fight’s in two days, and it was a bad cut.
Men’s middleweight (75kg) – Quarterfinals
Misael Rodriguez (México) def. Hosam Abdin (Egypt)
Rodriguez got here with a walkover win in the round of 16 due to Michael O’Reilly’s failed drug test, but he made the most of the chance, and now he’s guaranteed at least a bronze medal, something of a Cindrella story.
Bektemir Melekuziev (Uzbekistan) def. Krishan Vikas (India)
Vikas is good. Melekuziev is, like, much better. The middleweight division has been not so hot so far, but Melekuziev in the bottom half and top seed Arlen López in the top half have been excellent.
Men’s heavyweight (91kg) – FINAL
Evgeny Tishchenko (Russia) def. Vassiliy Levit (Kazakhstan)
Tishchenko did not win this fight. Period. I’ll have more on it later.
