Mexican Rey Vargas is a long way from home, fighting The Pride of Yorkshire Gavin McDonell, on February 25 at the Hull Ice Arena, in a “White Rose” event presented by Matchroom Boxing.
Vargas (28-0, 22 KO´s), aged 26, and the former European champion McDonnell (16-0-2, 4 KO´s), aged 30, will clash for the 122 pounds crown vacated by Hozumi Hasegawa, from Japan, who conquered three different weight divisions, and then having achieved his goals, he retired.
Vargas was the mandatory challenger to face Hasegawa but when Vargas retired, he was ordered to fight McDonnell, for the vacant belt.
A McDonell victory would mean history in British boxing, He is the twin brother of the bantamweight champion, Jamie McDonnell. If Gavin wins , they would become the first twin brother from Britain to hold world titles simultaneously.
Vargas comes from knocking out former world champion, Alexander Muñoz, in five torrid rounds on September 3rd . McDonell has won 5 fights in a row since he conquered the Britain title.
In the co main event of the night, Luke Campbell (15-1, 12 KO), Olympic gold medalist in 2012, will defend his WBC silver lightweight belt against Jairo”Doberman” López (21-6, 14 KO), a colleague of Vargas.
Campbell , aged 29 , is a hard bitten southpaw who could be contesting the world title if he wins. He has won 3 times since his defeat by split decision against Yvan Mendy in 2012. Campbell will fight as the local hero. Jairo Lopez was able to recover his career winning a trio of important victories after 3 defeats in a row.
