FILIPINO boxer Jeronil Borres twice knock down his Korean rival Joo Hyun Jung but still came up short and lost by a controversial split decision in their battle for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council flyweight title last Saturday at the Bomnae Gym in Chuncheon, South Korea.
Borres twice sent down the canvas the Korean in the 3rd round and completely dominated the 12-round title fight.
But Korean judges Soon Chul Hwang (115-114) and Wan Soo Yuh (114-113) both gave it to their fellow countryman while the other Korean judge Kyoung Ha Shin saw it in favor of Borres at 114-112.
“Maski yung Korean boxing promoter Thomas Lee at matchmaker Ulysses Sato nag congratulate na sa amin at sinabing panalo na si Borres. Pero sila din mismo ay nagulat din nang marinig na ang Koreano ang nanalo,” said Borres’ trainer Roy Sumile.
The promoter was ashamed of the decision that he later hosted a dinner for Borres and Sumile.
“Filipino win ang sabi ng promoter sa amin,” said Sumile.
It was only the second loss for Borres, who also has seven wins and one draw with five knockouts. Joo improved his record of eight wins, three losses and one draw with two knockouts.
