Just after super welterweight slugger Yoshihiro Kamegai called it quits, Robert Guerrero, who retired after a crushing loss to Omar Figueroa last year, is reportedly set to return to the ring on December 1st as part of the Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury undercard, taking on TBA at Staples Center.
Guerrero (33-6-1, 18 KO) won titles at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight before jumping directly to 147 pounds, where he abandoned his slickster stylings in favor of grueling close-quarters bruising. This carried him past Andre Berto and into a fight with Floyd Mayweather, but resulted in him losing five out of his last seven fights as he consistently struggled against top competition. It could easily have been 6/7, as he scraped past Aron Martinez by the skin of his teeth.
Finally, last July, Figueroa absolutely stomped the never-before-stopped “Ghost,” dropping him five times in three rounds to force the referee into action.
Guerrero is 35 years old and had issues with even mediocre opposition before calling it quits. I don’t care how confident he is, I don’t want to see him back in the ring. But we will, and you can bet he’ll be used as résumé fodder for some rising welterweight in search of a name win before long.
