Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports, tells RingTV that the company is currently in the midst of preparing a return for Miguel Cotto. The current working theory is to have Cotto return on June 24 with Yoshihiro Kamegai being targeted as a potential opponent.
“We’re having conversations with Peter (Nelson) and HBO. We’re trying to look at a couple of fights down the road, get him back in the ring in June and then hopefully a big fight in the fall and we hope to have something resolved and announced in the next 10 days to two weeks.”
Speaking of Kamegai, Yormark would only say that he’s “being strongly considered.”
Cotto hasn’t fought since dropping a decision to Canelo Alvarez in late 2015. Since then Cotto had a fight lined-up against James Kirkland, but Kirkland would pull out of that fight shortly after the opening press conferences citing an injury he sustained during training camp – nixing Cotto’s plans for the top of the year.
If Kamegai does happen to land this proposed fight, he will be coming off of a stoppage win in his rematch with Jesus Soto Karass last September. Cotto, meanwhile, has vowed to retire at the end of this year, meaning that he’s down to the last two prizefights or his career.
