Roman Gonzalez possible for Canelo-Golovkin 2 card

By Dan Ambrose: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says he’s looking to place former 4-division world champion Román ‘Chocolatito’ González on the undercard of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin 2 rematch on May 5.

Loeffler has ruled out adding the 30-year-old Chocolatito to SuperFly2 next year. Loeffler prefers that Gonzalez fight on the undercard of the Canelo vs. GGG 2 card.

Gonzalez has lost his last 2 fights to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. Chocolatito was blown out completely in 4 rounds in their rematch on September 9. Chocolatito was dropped 2 times in round 4. In the second knockdown, Chocolatito’s eyes were closed and he was clearly out cold. Some boxing fans believe Chocolatito was crying as he made the ringwalk on that night. I didn’t see any tears in Gonzalez’s eyes, but he did have a look of pure anguish, as if he were about to deal with an event that he wasn’t ready for. In hindsight, Gonzalez should have taken a few tune-up fights before facing Rungvisai a second time.

It would be a bad idea to have Gonzalez fight on SuperFly2 card, because Rungvisai will be on that card. It would put Chocolatito in a situation where the two fighters would be talked about a lot. It’s better for Gonzalez to fight on a separate card than Rungvisai.

Gonzalez needs to take a confidence booster at this point in his career, as he needs to get used to winning again. Fighting Rungvisai a second time was a complete disaster for Gonzalez.
“For Superfly 2, no, we’re thinking about what could come back in the Golovkin fight, if it’s with Canelo maybe on that same card,” said Loeffler to ESPN Deportes when asked if Gonzalez will be fighting on the SuperFlyd 2 card. ”It’s a matter of making some calls and let’s see what they say,” said Loeffler about Gonzalez’s management.

Chocolatito has been fighting off and on Golovkin’s undercards for the last 2 years since 2015, and he’s received a great deal of attention being on the cards. If Chocolatito can fight on the undercard of Canelo vs. GGG 2, he would be seen by a massive amount of boxing fans worldwide. That fight is going to be seen by a lot of boxing fans from around the globe. It would be important that the right opponent be found for Gonzalez, as he can’t be fighting someone that is a little too good right now.

Ideally, Chocolatito should try and move back down to flyweight. He’s not cut out for the super flyweight division. We’ve seen that now with Gonzalez losing 2 fights to Rungvisai, and taking a beating against Carlos Cuadras in barely beating him last year. Gonzalez’s punching power isn’t nearly good enough for him to dominate at 115 compared to at 112. Chocolatito started his career out at in the minimumweight division (105) in 2005, and he’s been slowly moving up in weight ever since.

10 pounds doesn’t sound like a big jump going from 105 to 115, but it is in Gonzalez’s case. He’s not the same fighter at super flyweight compared to the way he was at flyweight, light flyweight and minimumweight.

Gonzalez looked like a shot fighter against Rungvisai in the rematch last September. Gonzalez needs to show the boxing world that he still has something left in the tank, because right now the general perception is he’s over-the-hill. It could be though that Rungvisai is that good of a fighter that he made Gonzalez look like that. You have to remember how bad Gonzalez looked against Cuadras last year. Gonzalez’s face was badly swollen in that fight, and the only reason he was because Cuadras ran out of gas in the second half of the contest.
