By Dan Ambrose: The March 18th fight card headlined by IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs just got a lot stronger today with the addition of WBC super flyweight champion Roman “Chocoltito” Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KOs) vs. Srisaket sor Rungvisai (41-4-1, 38 KOs) being added to the undercard as the co-feature bout at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Gonzalez-Rungvisa isn’t a great fight like last September’s match between Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras, but it will be nice for the boxing fans to see Gonzalez in action. His opponent 30-year-old Rungvisai is little more than the prop that will standing across from Gonzalez in the ring on March 18 to absorb punishment.

It’s not going to be a great fight. Rungvisai already lost to Cuadras, and he’s done nothing since then other than pad his record with wins over 2nd and 3rd tier opposition. It’s always good to have Roman Gonzalez fighting on an undercard of Gennady Golovkin’s fight cards, even if his opposition isn’t always good.

Gonzalez needs to rest up and get an easy win under his belt after the tremendous punishment he absorbed in his last fight against Cuadras. Gonzalez’s face was badly swollen up by Cuadras’ heavy blows. Gonzalez totally outclassed Cuadras, but the power on the Mexican fighters’ punches left Gonzalez looking like the loser. Some boxing fans even thought that Cuadras had done enough to deserve the win.

Unfortunately for Cuadras, those fans weren’t working as judges on the night of the fight. Rungvisai, 30, will give Gonzalez the chance to get an easy win without taking a lot of punishment. Rungvisai is a decent fighter, but he’s so many poor opponents during his career that it’s impossible to know how good he is.

All we know is Rungvisai has a very, very padded record of dreadful opposition for the most part. When Rungvisai has stepped it up and fought good opposition, he’s lost. I’m not sure why the World Boxing Council has Rungvisai rated No.2 with their organization, because based off his resume, he should probably be rated lower at No.15 or not even in the top 15. His record is way too padded.
“Rungvisai is a very tough fight for me, I know that he has fought many other great fighters including Carlos Cuadras, but with my training and the blessing of God I plan to come out victorious,” said Gonzalez.
