Rolando Romero became the new WBA Interim Lightweight Champion by defeating Jackson Mariñez by unanimous decision at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
The Cuban-American got 115-113, 116-112, and 118-110 on the judges’ cards to win the black and gold belt in a tough fight with a lot of strategy from both fighters.
Romero was very offensive and had to deal with a taller opponent who worked well with his jab and kept him at bay for many parts of the fight. However, Romero’s insistence made him accumulate points and win in the eyes of the local commission’s judges.
Romero keeps his undefeated record in 12 fights, 10 of them won by KO, while Maríñez now has a balance of 19 wins, 1 lost, and 7 KOs.
