The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced that due to injury, Anthony Dirrell is out of his scheduled September super middleweight title fight with David Benavidez. Dirrell will be replaced by Ronald Gavril, who was already training for an August 22 fight date.
Gavril (18-1, 14 KO) is a Romanian based in Las Vegas, who most recently fought on April 29, beating Decarlo Perez. He has no wins over contenders, and did suffer an upset loss to veteran Elvin Ayala, perhaps his toughest opponent, back in 2015.
But he is on a seven-fight win streak, for whatever that’s worth.
Benavidez (18-0, 17 KO) has been a wrecking ball thus far in his pro career, and is coming off of a terrific fight with Rogelio “Porky” Medina on May 20 in Laredo, Texas, a fight that aired on FS1, with Benavidez winning by TKO in the eighth round.
Benavidez-Gavril is currently set to take place in Los Angeles.
