Top super featherweight prospect Ryan “Kingry” Garcia, last seen knocking out Fernando Vargas (not that one) last month in nasty fashion, will once again waste no time returning to action, headlining a May 4th ESPN show against Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez.
The fight takes place in Carson, California’s vaunted StubHub Center.
Garcia (14-0, 13 KO), ESPN’s “Prospect of the Year” for 2017, has knocked out his last ten opponents and rarely gone more than two months between fights. He looks like he’s got the skills and the drive; all that’s left to do is throw him in against guys who know what they’re doing and see what happens.
Velez (26-4-1, 18 KO) was never world-beater, but he was at least seen as Pretty Good (tm) before a loss to Ronny Rios kicked off a four-fight losing streak. He’s never been stopped, though, and is coming off a knockout of (what’s left of) Juanma Lopez.
Velez is a good opponent for Garcia at this point in “Kingry’s” career, and even if it would be nice to see him face some real stiff competition immediately, at least it won’t be long before Garcia’s in the ring again.
