REIGNING Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) light flyweight champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo and his challenger Crison “Cowboy’ Omayao both made their weights today (Oct. 19) for their championship fight tomorrow (Oct. 20) at the Barangay Granada covered court in Bacolod City.
Sabillo only tipped the scales at 105 and ½ lbs. while Omayao submitted 107 and ½ lbs.
“Medyo magaan talaga si Sabillo kasi he used to fight for the minimumweight (105),” said international promoter Brico Santig of Highland Promotions.
Sabillo(26W-4L-1L, 13 KOs) is a former WBO World, OPBF and Philippine minimumweight champion. The 33-year old Sabillo won the ABF light flyweight title by scoring a 3rdround knockout win against Jack Amisa of Indonesia last May 27 at the 888 Chinatown Square Mall in Bacolod.
The 24-year old Omayao (22W-14L-4D, 7 KOs), on the other hand, is also a former Philippine minimumweight and Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) light flyweight title-holder from Valencia City, Bukidnon.
The championship fight dubbed as the “Fist of Glory” is a presentation of the Naris-Monju-Mayor Bing Leonardia Boxing Development Program.
It is free to the public as part of the annual Masskara Festival courtesy of Mayor Bing Leonardia, former Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Juan Ramon Guanzon and ABF President Naris Singwancha of Thailand.
The main supporting event is a championship fight for the interim OPBF flyweight title between the undefeated Jayr Raquinel (7W-0L-1D, 5 KOs) and Richard Rosales (12W-4L-2D, 7KOs).
The 20-year old Raquinel was scaled at 109 lbs. but Rosales had to take another attempt after he was more than three pounds in his first attempt at 115 lbs. He made it exactly at 112 lbs. in final attempt.
Pitted in the undercard are:
John Michael Zulueta vs. Ernesto Alera (6 rds.-108 lbs.)
Paolo Sy vs. Elmer Liboon (4 rds.-112 lbs.)
Mark Mahilum vs. Tomas Rebusit (4 rds.-112 lbs.)
