BOXING promotion companies Sampson Boxing LLC and Golden Boy Promotions join forces again to give boxing one of the most competitive fights that can be organized these days, without a doubt attractive not only for Latin Americans but also for fans around the world: Javier “El Abejón” Fortuna vs Jorge“ El Niño de Oro ”Linares.
The fight will take place on August 28 at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, USA. The World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight Diamond title, which Venezuela’s Linares has once owned, will be in dispute. (47-5, 29 KO). The transmission will be in charge of DAZN.
Sampson Lewkowicz, who promotes the campaign of the Dominican Fortuna, was very pleased with the arrangement with GBP, a promoter who guides the career of the “Golden Boy” of Barinas, Venezuela, and stressed that both companies have long had a link that transcends business.
“I have always felt part of the Golden Boy family, with whose people I have had a great relationship for a long time, always in pursuit of offering the boxing fan the best fights, as Linares will undoubtedly be against my represented Fortuna”, Sampson noted.
Lewkowicz revealed that two-time world champion and current No. 1 WBC at 135 pounds, “The Drone,” was aiming to bring more glory to his country with the third title in different divisions (he was a featherweight and super featherweight titleholder) and there were several options for achieving this. .
One, wait for champion Devin Haney, who had a shoulder operation at the end of the year; the other arranged a crossing with the English Luke Campbell, second classified WBC, a fight that was in talks but could not guarantee the completion of a title suit as Fortuna wanted.
There appeared Golden Boy Promotions, which has the third-ranked WBC world, undefeated Ryan Garcia, a fight that Fortuna and Sampson accepted and sought, but that Garcia declined.
After cardboard, the lawsuit was agreed against Jorge Linares (former tri-world champion -feather, super feather, and light-), also handled by GBP. The title to play was missing and there Sampson contacted the WBC, which ordered the Diamond title to be put into play.
In this regard, Lewkowicz said: “The title Diamond is something extremely important to us. It is reserved for elite boxers. I have the great memory that the second WBC Diamond champion in history was my friend and great represented Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez, in 2011. The first was Manny Pacquiao in 2009 ”.
And he added: “then men like Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, Leo Santa Cruz, Canelo Álvarez, Sergey Kovalev, Linares himself, Callum Smith, Nonito Donaire, Regis Prograis, Errol Spence and Mikey García had that title. That is why we believe that Javier Fortuna’s desire to accumulate more successes and glory by contesting a world-class crown at 135, has been fulfilled.”
Javier Fortuna, born in La Romana (Dominican Republic), 31 years old, will enter the fight with an excellent record of 35-2-1, 24 KO and with a great victory in his last presentation, when he knocked out the former champion in two rounds world feather, the Argentine Jesús Cuellar last November.
