Sean McComb delighted to have step-up wish granted

Sean McComb [4(3)-0] is excited by – rather than nervous of – the step his takes tomorrow night.

The lightweight prospect has caught the eye since turning over as recently as August with four victories and four impressive displays.

So dominant has the Turf Lodge puncher been that he has been screaming for a step-up and he gets a significant one on the Conrad Cummings-topped ‘King of the Celts’ card at the Titanic Exhibition Centre.

Whilst Zoltan Szabo is no world beater, he is much more than your average test for a fighter so new to the game, especially one taking the step up to six rounds for the first time.

The 24-year-old Hungarian has upset previous and holds a stoppage win over Stephen Ormond, has taken some experienced pros the distance and upset others, while he has stoppage wins over many of the regular journeymen that frequent these shores.

Granted the Hungarian champion has lost in recent steps up in class, but the majority of his defeats come against fighters much further down the line than McComb and 11-knock out wins prove he has shock value power.

It represents a big step up for novice pro McComb, especially at just a few days notice, but one he is delighted with.

The former Elite amateur noted how “I’ve been pushing for a step up in opponent for some time now. I’ve been asking my trainer Danny Vaughan because the people I’ve faced so far have been a drop from elite amateurs.”

“I get little out of beating people like that up and only getting a couple of rounds in so I welcome facing Szabo.”

Keen to be tested, McComb knows all about Szabo and outlined how “in him, I have a proper test before Christmas and the new year and I’m looking forward to it.”

“It’s a massive step up. He’s got a winning record and with 11 knockouts, he obviously carries power. He’s lost to massive names and he’s beaten some unbeaten prospects. He’s obviously a big jump up for me this early in my career but I’m excited by it.”

“Stephen Ormond has fought at the highest level so Szabo stopping him with a body shot tells you he has power. I’ll have that in the back of my mind going into the fight and I believe it will make me perform better.”
