It won’t be in Madison Square Garden after all, but the WBO light heavyweight title fight between champion Sergey Kovalev and Eleider Alvarez is officially go for August 4th at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City. Kathy Duva and co. will officially announce the card at a press conference this Saturday.
This tweet from WBA champ Dmitry Bivol, also part of the Main Events stable, suggests he’ll be on the card as well.
Dmitry Bivol@bivol_dMy next fight will be at the beginning of August. So I will start the first stage of my preparation soon, in Kislovodsk where we going to prepare in terms of strengths and conditioning. There some names for me to fight and we will announce my rival in the near future! #HBOboxing
Alvarez (23-0, 11 KO) is actually the #1 contender for both the WBC and WBA titles and ranked just #6 by the WBO, but he more than deserves the Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KO) fight after waiting so long for Adonis Stevenson to honor his obligations. He’s a solid test for the “Krusher,” who has yet to face a top-notch foe since the disastrous Andre Ward rematch.
It’s not immediately clear who Bivol (13-0, 11 KO) could fight. As mentioned, Alvarez is his #1 contender, while #2 Marcus Browne was already cast aside by Main Events for his domestic violence issues. #3 Karo Murat is free, for whatever that’s worth.
