We haven’t seen former middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) in the ring since a one-sided loss to Miguel Cotto in 2014, but it turns out that may not be the last we’ve seen of him in the ring.
The 43-year-old fighter, who officially announced his retirement in mid-2015, tells WBN that he has resumed training and has been cleared to fight by Argentine authorities, saying the he’s recovered from his injuries during this time off. Martinez was plagued by knee problems the last few times we saw him compete and in the Cotto fight he almost looked like a crippled man.
With all that said, it’s pretty difficult to believe Martinez could have “recovered” from a degenerative knee condition, but he says he’s feeling good now and is interested in fighting a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as early as this November.
“It is OK that Julio Cesar Chavez wants to fight me again as I would only come back to face him or another big name of my generation like Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao,” Martinez exclusively told World Boxing News.
”For me, this is a big challenge and I love challenges. I am training since months ago and I am not joking about this. If he really wants it we can do it.”
Martinez says if a rematch between Chavez Jr. and himself does manage to come together he believes a catchweight of 165lbs would be suitable for both men.
In the meantime we’ll keep an eye on how things develop…
