SIX YOUNG boxers of Mandaluyong City scored contrasting wins to lead the qualifiers going to the Luzon Semi-Finals of the PSC-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup.
Only Glen Duman-ag will not advance to the semi-finals for Mandaluyong after he failed to make the weight in the Youth Boys light flyweight division (46-49 kg.) during the quarter finals held over the weekend at the Binan City Gym in Laguna.

Duman-ag was eliminated by a walk over to Eddie Mapsusao of Camarines Sur, who will next face Pili’s Ronaldo Quilano in the semifinals slated on March 17 in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Mandaluyong, however, will still have six boxers going to the semi-finals.

They are B-Boy Cenita, Nicky Boy Oladive, Remart Gomez, Dave Asi Laurejas, Ventura Dumaguit and Nicolas Inocencio.

Cenita, Dumaguit and Inocencio all easily advanced with walk-over wins while Oladive stopped R.G. Erestain of Sorsogon Province by a referee-stopped-contest in Round 1 in the Jr. Boys light flyweight (48 kg.) category.

Laurejas pummeled to submission La Union’s Michael Vincent Borja by a RSC in Round 2 of the Jr. Boys bantamweight (54 kg.) division while Gomez won on points over Olongapo’s Ronnnie Husi in the Jr. Boys light bantamweight (52 kg.).

“Maraming walk-over wins dahil sa hindi sila pinayagan ng DepEd at yung iba naman ay nagkasakit,” [There were a lot of walk-over wins because they were not allowed by DepEd while the others got sick) said supervising technical director Rogelio Fortaleza of the Philippine Sports Institute.

Student athletes are reportedly no longer allowed by the Department of Education to prepare them for their regional meets that will qualify them for the Palarong Pambansa in Vigan this summer.

Bulan has three qualifiers – Jhunmil Guban, Jano Bartolay and Floyd Gaspi – followed by Baguio, Sorsogon Province, Sorsogon City, Olongapo and Binan with two boxers each qualifying to the semifinals.

Camarines Norte, Castilla, Camarines Sur, Tayabas, Pili, Tuguegarao and Iriga each have one.

The next leg will be the Visayas Quarter Finals slated on February 24 and 25 in the City of Naga, Cebu Province. The nationwide grassroots program is sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission in coordination with the Office of Senator Manny Pacquiao.
