SKATING ON THIN ICE! GAVIN’S TWIN AMBITION

WBCBy WBCnews

At the Hull Ice Arena in Hull, England, Englishman Gavin McDonnell will attempt to conquer the vacant WBC super bantamweight title against Mexican Rey Vargas on February 25, announced Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Boxing.

Vargas (28-0, 22 KOs), 26, and former European Champion McDonnell (16-0, 4 KOs & 2 draws), 30, will contest the prestigious WBC super bantamweight belt vacated by Japanese veteran Hozumi Hasegawa, after announcing his retirement.

Gavin is brother of the WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell and if he wins, they’d be the first British twins to simultaneously hold world championships.

“This is a great opportunity for Gavin McDonnell to win the first world title in 2017 and also to create a special story for British boxing,” said Hearn. “Vargas is an excellent boxer, but I think we can create an electric environment in the Hull Arena that can help him to win this fight.”
