Spike O’Sullivan claims he’ll face Canelo Alvarez in September

This seems a little too nuts to be true, but Spike O’Sullivan and his promoter have confirmed that the Cork native will face Canelo Alvarez in September regardless of the outcome of Canelo’s rematch with Gennady Golovkin.

Spike O’Sullivan’s promoter confirms Canelo fight –

It seems Spike O’Sullivan [27(19)-2(1)] dropped Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey right in it – but the Murphys…

Said promoter, the Dropkick Murphys’ own Ken Casey, made the statements in an interview with SiriusXM Boxing.

O’Sullivan (27-2, 19 KO), who tore up Antoine Douglas in September, was in talks to fight Danny Jacobs before Maciej Sulecki got the call instead. Besides being a natural middleweight, he has nothing for Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KO); there’s an argument that he didn’t win a single round against Billy Joe Saunders or Chris Eubank Jr.

Alvarez would thrash him and look good doing it.

Whether this winds up being empty hype or not, there’s still a lot of year to go between now and then and any number of shenanigans that could ensue if Canelo-GGG II winds up as controversial as the first one.

And, of course, all of this is moot if O’Sullivan falls to TBA on May 4th.
