Stipe Miocic asks Daniel Cormier for rematch

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

The conversation on who should be the next opponent for UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has primarily centered on wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar and Cormier’s biggest rival, Jon Jones.

But the man Cormier defeated on Saturday night at UFC 226 to claim the heavyweight belt wants to make sure his hat is in the ring, as well.

Stipe Miocic, who lost to Cormier via first-round knockout in Las Vegas, tweeted congratulations to the new titleholder on Monday afternoon … and indicated his interest in a rematch.

Cormier, for his part, didn’t specifically respond to the rematch request. But he reciprocated the respect, and wished Miocic and his family, who are expecting the birth of a child this week, the best of luck.

Miocic’s loss to Cormier ended a six-fight winning streak, during which he became the only competitor in UFC history to successfully defend the heavyweight title on three consecutive occasions.
