Dan Henderson vs Jon Jones and Miesha Tate vs Jessica Eye headline the December 11th card in Portland, Oregon.
Submission grappling and mixed martial arts continue to remind everyone how close bedfellows they really as more competitors cross over between the two. MMA star Chael Sonnen continues to bring the two together with his Submission Underground promotion. The second event features a main event where a legend faces a controversial star, as Dan Henderson will battle Jon Jones.
Submission Underground 2 features some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts and brings them into the realm of competitive grappling. Jones and Henderson are the scheduled main event, and the co-main event is a rematch of sorts as former women’s bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate, faces off against Jessica Eye.
Henderson and Jones were supposed to face each other at the cancelled event that was UFC 151, and the two would never cross paths in the Octagon. Eye and Tate fought back at UFC on Fox 16 in the fight that gave Tate the eventual opportunity to challenge for the women’s 135-pound title. Other than Henderson’s former Olympic accolades, none of these fighters are known for their success in the grappling world. Still, this event brings together the type of stars that have the potential to bring interest from the MMA fan base.
“Submission grappling is one of the purest forms of fighting, and we’re excited to showcase some of the best fighters in the world,” FloSports co-founder and CEO Martin Floreani said as reported by Jeremy Botter of FloSports. “We anticipate more fireworks on December 11.”
The rest of the undercard has yet to be announced but the expectations are that more men and women from mainstream MMA and the grappling space will be included. Submission Underground 2 is set for December 11 from the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. The show will also be available on FloGrappling.com.
