SULAIMAN RE-ELECTED WBC PRESIDENT

WORLD Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has been unanimously re-elected as its president at the on-going WBC 54th annual Convention at the Diplomat and Spa Hotel in Florida, USA.

Sulaiman’s re-election was formally proposed by Vice President Rex Walker, who said no one could be doing a better and finer job.

Sulaiman then proposed that the current Board of Governors, who have helped him so much, be re-elected. And this was voted and so the continuity will carry on.

Sulaiman said the last three years, following the death of his beloved Father Don Jose- WBC Lifetime President, have an extraordinary journey, which had taught him so much.

He thanked his Mother Dona Martha and his Wife Christiane for their love and support.

“I take this appointment as President of the WBC as a great pride and I vow I will do my absolute best with the support of Christiane, our Kids, the WBC Board of Governors as well as all of the promoters, managers and fighters, Ring Officials and members of the Media. I thank you once again for the trust you have put in Me.”

Mauricio was first appointed by the WBC Board of Governors to replace his late father Jose Sulaiman, who served as president from 1975 until his death in 2014.

The other past presidents were Luis Spota and Ramon G. Velázquez of Mexico and Justiniano N. Montano, Jr. of the Philippines.

WBC was initially established by 11 countries – the United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Philippines, Panama, Chile, Peru, Venezuela and Brazil in Mexico on February 14, 1963 upon the invitation of Adolfo López Mateos, then President of Mexico, to form an international organization to unify all commissions of the world to control the expansion of boxing.

WBC today has 161 member countries and nine continental federations including the Asian Boxing Council (ABCO).
