The Golden Boy/Main Events/Facebook partnership has its second main event. Sullivan Barrera tells El Nuevo Herald that he’s facing Sean Monaghan on August 18th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The fight will be Main Events’ first contribution to the whole endeavor.
Barrera (21-2, 14 KO) is coming off a one-sided loss to Dmitry Bivol, which snapped a very solid four-fight winning streak that featured wins over then-unbeaten Vyacheslav Shabranskyy and a red-hot Joe Smith Jr. I can forgive him a moderate step down against Monaghan (29-1, 17 KO), who was rather thoroughly stomped by Marcus Browne last year.
As an aside, I took a look at the rankings to see where Barrera and Monaghan stood. Only the WBC has them both in the top 15, where Monaghan is #6 and Barrera is #13. That puts Barrera behind both #12 Felix Valera, whom he beat decisively, and #7 Shabranskyy, whom he destroyed.
This is so stupid.
Barrera is consistently entertaining and has a habit of getting dropped, which means no fight is a gimme. Seems like a decent matchup for a free card.
