The heart soul and function of the World Boxing Council

The WBC was established as the inspirational initiative of the then President of Mexico, Adolfo López Mateos, to create an organization specifically designed and focused upon unifying all the commissions in the world and to help properly facilitate the ongoing expansion of boxing.

This is how on February 14, 1963, the World Boxing Council was created, initially by 11 countries: the United States, Argentina, England, France, Mexico, Philippines, Panama, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil.

So far, six men have held the position of World Boxing Council President.  However, Dr. José Sulaimán Chagnón, who became President on December 5, 1975, in the city of Tunis remained as leader of the WBC for more than 38 years. He is the colossus,  who consolidated the World Boxing Council, as the most important of all at the international level.

Under his mandate, the WBC has evolved, grown, and transformed the way in which this noble sport functions and has earned admiration through achievement. The WBC`s primary priority has always been to stand firm as a guardian of safety, health, and respect for the boxer, who alone and courageously gets into the ring to conquer glory.

Consisting of 166 countries with their respective confederations, its main task is to make boxing a fair and safe sport. Today, under the leadership of its President, Mr. Mauricio Sulaimán, the WBC continues to work to enhance boxing, as well as to protect the health and well-being of all boxers, above any interest, always promoting our values.  Loyalty, justice, integrity, and respecting the social commitment which is the very foundation of our history.

Our leader has maintained and developed the WBC as an innovative body that day by day seeks to improve and take our sport to the next level. This is how in recent years he has implemented various actions and programs that have meant another great step in boxing. These include.
