“Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising up every time we fail again. “ – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
This quote was brought to reality by the life journey of this young but promising boxer, Muhammad Ridhwan. He fights a professional in the featherweight division. The path had roadblocks and was never easy but the young boxer proved that everything he worked for are worth all the efforts he gave.
Ridhwan came from a simple family in Lion City, Singapore as a son of Ahmad Bin Leman and Rogayah Binte Ramli. He’s the eldest amongst his 3 siblings. Fortunately, one of which also joined boxing and now in the amateur level.
He grew up like any typical Singaporean. He was very focused on his studies than sports. There’s even one time when he was excused from participating in school sports due to his health, having low and irregular heartbeat. Later on, he took a job as a kitchen helper where he had dreamt of owning his own café someday. Ridhwan graduated his studies with Diploma in Sports and Wellness Management from Nanyang Polytechnic and a Diploma in Boxing Coaching from the University of Physical Education in Budapest, Hungary.
A realization came to him one day. He wanted change. He wanted to do something different. He developed fondness in watching boxing movies. Social media and internet helped grow his rising passion which later on was put into action. At the age of 17, he started his boxing career and joined Kadir’s Boxing School to train. After 3 months, he found doing the basics boring and almost decided to quit. He never had a fight until one day, his coach told him about an upcoming competition which made him excited and confident that it will be a sure win for him. But, he lost his first fight as his corner threw a towel to halt the bout. It was the most important fight for Ridhwan because that fight built his character as a fighter to never stop despite of the odds such as losses. It boosted his fighting spirit and will to stand up and aim to strive to be better. That fight marked him to a great boxer someday.
Question: Why boxing of all sports?
“I love boxing because it is difficult but I enjoy the challenge and I always wanted to be up for it. Boxing teaches you a lot of lessons which you can apply in life as well… “
