The Family of the World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaiman Saldívar, deeply regret the death of former world champion Ernesto “Ñato” Marcel, at the age of 72, due to a series of health complications.
Born in Colón, Panama, on May 23, 1948, he had a fabulous professional record of 40 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws, with 23 wins by knockout.
In November 1971 Ernesto fought for the WBC featherweight crown against the Japanese Kuniaki Shibata, in a great match that ended in a draw. The following year he won the WBA featherweight title by defeating Antonio Gómez in Maracay, Venezuela.
The entire WBC joins Ernesto Marcel’s family and his many friends in these sad times, ameliorated by everlasting memories to forever cherish.
