Veteran promoter/manager/trainer Tony Davitt has a new fighter, and is planning to gate-crash the big ‘Ireland’s Last Man Standing’ tournament next.
It was announced during the week that an eight-man Prizefighter-style tournament will take place at the National Stadium on Saturday March 3rd, and is set to be shown live on terrestrial television.
The competition in Dublin has a top prize of €25,000 alongside a €5,000 donation to the winner’s amateur club.
The first edition of ‘Ireland’s Last Man Standing’ will feature middleweights (with an upper limit of 165lbs) and that is music to the ears of Davitt.
The respected boxing man has recently signed Scotland’s John McCallum [10(0)-1(1)], with the Edinburgh fighter having recently relocated to Ireland and is set to take out a licence with the BUI.
Out of action since last October, the 29 year old has recently been sparring with Gerard Whitehouse ahead of the Balbriggan man’s BUI Celtic welterweight title fight with Jay Byrne on ‘Celtic Clash 4’ this Saturday the 2nd of December.
A physically-imposing fighter, McCallum has been boxing his whole life, and spent time out in freddie Roach’s Wildcard Gym. His sole loss came controversially in a British super middleweight title eliminator, being stopped on cuts after six against Leon McKenzie.
Davitt is confident his man can take home top prize next March – should he be selected as one of the eight competitors – and he told Irish-Boxing.com that “I’m going to put John in that tournament and he’s going to win it.”
