Trent Broadhurst gets Dmitry Bivol for world title challenge in Monaco

FEW fighters have been earmarked for world championship fights in this country like Trent Broadhurst.

A prodigious talent since bursting onto the amateur scene as a teenager, Broadhurst, now 29, has been gifted the opportunity of a lifetime on November 4th, when the Queenslander challenges highly touted Russian firebrand Dmitry Bivol at Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Having been used as a sparring partner for the best part of a decade by Australia’s highest level operators, including Daniel Geale and Anthony Mundine, Broadhurst (20-1, 12 KOs) now has the chance to secure a world title of his own in a fight that will be televised live on US cable giant HBO.

His opponent, the Kyrgyzstan-born Bivol (11-0, 9 KOs) has been tabbed by HBO as the second coming of Gennady Golovkin, with the highly credentialed Russian steamrolling through his opponents in a short professional career that is yet to hit a three year duration.

Bivol, 26, verified his credentials as a blue-chip prospect at world level with stellar one-sided knockouts over Samuel Clarkson and Cedric Agnew this year. Bivol and Broadhurst share one common opponent in Robert Berridge, who gave Broadhurst his lone career blemish in 2011, while Bivol made light work of the Kiwi slugger in four heats.

The event will be promoted by prominent English powerhouse, Matchroom Sport, who recently announced their intentions of breaking into the lucrative US market with the signing of former middleweight title holder Daniel Jacobs.

The pair will challenge for the vacant WBA light heavyweight title, which was previously shared by super champion Andre Ward and regular titleholder Badou Jack. However, following Ward’s surprise retirement last week and Jack’s decision to vacate his recently acquired title, the championship currently has no outright owner.

Earlier today, Broadhurst released a classy statement via his social media accounts, thanking his former manager Angelo Di Carlo and current advisor Peter Kahn from Florida-based managerial firm, Fight Game Advisor.

“I will challenge Dmitry Bivol for the vacant WBA light heavyweight world title,” said Broadhurst in a statement released on his social media accounts.

“First and foremost, whilst we don’t see eye-to-eye these days and have gone our separate ways, I just want to acknowledge and thank Angelo Di Carlo and his families hard work,” he acknowledged. “I truly appreciate everything that was done for me leading up to our parting ways. I also want to thank my manager Peter Kahn for securing me this opportunity.”

“Bivol has become one of the most feared fighters in the world, I know this but it means nothing to me,” he concluded. “He is human just like myself – I am working overtime – and will leave no stone unturned in my quest to become world champion.”
