REIGNING WBO International super flyweight champion Rex “The Wonder Kid” Tso will defend his crown against former WBA world champion Kohei Kono of Japan on October 7 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
It will be Tso’s second title defense of the vacant crown he won via a unanimous decision against another Japanese Ryutoo Maenkawa last October 8, 2016 in Hong Kong.
Tso, who is managed by Jay Lau of DEF Boxing Promotion retained it by knocking out Hirofumi Mukai also of Japan in the 8th round last March 11 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. The victory also kept Tso his WBC Asian Boxing Council and WBO Asia Pacific super flyweight title.
Kono, on the other hand, won his last right via a 5th round technical knockout on Yuranan Dookrathok last July 23 at the Ota City General Gym in Japan.
Kono lost his WBA world super flyweight title by a unanimous decision to Luis Concepcion last August 31, 2016. He also bowed to Naoya Inoue by a 6th round TKO on Dec. 30 at the Ariake Colosseum in their battle for the WBO world super flyweight title.
Kono (33-10-1, 14 KOs), however, is already 36 years old while Tso is only 30 years old with a clean record of 21 straight wins and 13 knockouts.
