Justin Gaethje’s UFC debut lived up to the hype, as he rallied to TKO Michael Johnson in an all-time classic.
In the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale, former WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje and Michael Johnson engaged in one of the craziest battles you will ever see. It was as action-packed a two-round fight as humanly possible, even by Justin Gaethje’s standards. And despite multiple instances where he was just about knocked out, Gaethje stopped Johnson late in round 2. This was one of the great back-and-forth brawls in UFC history.
Gaethje stumbled back on an early Johnson combination but he kept his composure. A right hand and a knee rocked “The Menace.” Johnson answered back with combination punching. Gaethje was doing the pressuring and firing off his deadly leg kicks. Johnson responded by going to the body. Justin answered with his own body punches. This was all just in the first-half of round 1! A left hook scored for Gaethje and momentarily stunned Johnson. They swung away and continued to trade ferocious leather. Johnson was getting tagged more often by the rights of Gaethje. It looked as if Johnson’s movement was hampered by the leg kicks. Gaethje bashed Johnson’s face with knees and then went back to the legs. A huge right uppercut wobbled Gaethje in the final minute. Johnson searched for a takedown on a hurt Gaethje, and then ended the round with enormous uppercuts and a jumping knee. Gaethje survived the danger.
Gaethje appeared to be recovered (or as much as he could be) as he came out for the start of round 2. That feeling wouldn’t last long, as another massive shot by Johnson put Gaethje just about out on his feet. Gaethje responded with an elbow and a knee after Johnson threw elbows against the fence. Justin continued to smash Johnson’s lead leg with kicks. Johnson was effective with his body punching. Gaethje worked his jab. A knee and an uppercut rocked Johnson badly and he was the one stumbling backwards. Extraordinary stuff. An elbow put Johnson down and he flopped to his back. Gaethje had him get back up to continue the war. A ridiculously damaging leg kick put Johnson down again. They were both exhausted after all of the mayhem. Gaethje had his hands on his knees. With seconds to go in the 2nd, Gaethje connected on a flying knee, then another knee, and that was all she wrote.
Official result: Justin Gaethje def. Michael Johnson by TKO (strikes) at 4:48 of round 2
