The great Mexican champion Julio Cesar Chavez fought Puerto Rican sensation Hector “Macho” Camacho, defending his super WBC lightweight title.
This fight generated great anticipation due to the boxing rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico, and by the heated press conferences in which this pair of warriors participated, with relish.
Chavez was on a seek and destroy mission, but southpaw Camacho boxed well if evasively. The 12 rounds saw Julio dominating the action, which was reflected on the judge’s scorecards: 117-111, 119-110 and 120-107.
SEPTEMBER 12, 1998
Four-division champion from Tijuana, Baja California, Erik “Terrible” Morales, made the fourth defense of his World Boxing Council super bantamweight crown against tough and talented American fighter Junior Jones.
Morales won the title in 1997 defeating Daniel Zaragoza; and prior to this confrontation with Jones, defended his crown against Jose Luis Bueno, Remigio Daniel Molina and John Lowey.
Junior Jones, born in Brooklyn, New York, a former WBA bantamweight champion, had defeated Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera a couple of times, sparking an expectation build up for the “Terrible” bout.
That night in the Plaza de Toros of Tijuana, the combat flared up, with the two fighters attacking in full flow. In the fourth round, Erik dropped Jones, sending him to the canvas. Jones got up still dazed, so Morales blazed, obliging the Referee to stop the fight.
