This fight was ugly from the start with bad blood boiling over from previous social media posts and broken relationships. Somewhere welterweight Cortez Chambliss (4-1, 4 KOs) got caught in the middle, and even worse, in the ring. Lanardo Tyner (35-13-2, 22 KOs) had some sort of relationship with Steve Zepke, Chambliss’ manager. This launched into a personal feud, which didn’t bold well for the boxing prospect Chambliss.
At the start, both fighters looked relaxed and ready for the battle. Tyner, with a 45-fight and 13-year experience advantage over Chambliss, caught Cortez early with what appeared to be a knockout and had veteran Referee Sam Williams appear to waive off the fight. There was so much confusion that Tyner was in the ropes celebrating and corners had jumped on the canvas. The fight continued without a clear explanation.
The first round produced two knockdowns of Cortez. Tyner continues his pursuit in the second Round dropping Chambliss with a left to the body. Chambliss did have a point deducted in the second for low blows. The 3rd, Tyner did not relinquish in punishing Chambliss ending the fight with another left to the body, finally, forcing Referee Sam Williams to waive off the fight. Chambliss gets credit for being in the ring with such a seasoned pro. But Tyner proved that age does not matter too much and may have a good opportunity as being a testing ground for prospects in a few more years to come.
Super middleweight Dorell VanHorn (11-1, 6 KOs) defeated Dwayne Williams (6-10, 3 KOs) by UD (62-53, 62-53, 58-55). The fight, which at times had the crowd booing, lacked action. The 5th Round has VanHorn knocking Williams to the canvas. VanHorn seemed to be landing the more accurate punches towards the end of the fight.
John Chalbeck (9-0, 7 KOs) easily beat Jermon Houck (1-2) by KO at the 2:54 mark of the 1st. Houck, who got hit in the corner, slowly began to fall, almost like a falling tree, to the canvas. Chalbeck showed mercy, as he knew Houck was hurt and going to fall over. The welterweight bout showed Chalbeck’s power, once again, as he continues to bring big crowds and a business like approach to his boxing career.
Super middleweight Winfred Harris improved (18-1, 9 KOs) with a (62-53, 58-56, 60-52) UD victory over Josue Obando (16-24-1, 12 KOs). The win starts Harris’ climb up the rankings, again, after a loss set back some momentum he had been gaining.
Fight of the night went to jr welterweight James Lester Jr. (12-15-1, 4 KOs) and Darnell Pettis (3-12). Both proved that records do not mean much, as they entertained the crowd with power shots and good action. Lester Jr. had all three judges score his way (59-54, 58-56, 58-56).
Promoter Carlos Llinas said at the weigh-ins that some big fights were in the future for middleweight Darryl Cunningham. The veteran, who now looks better than previous years, got opponent Raul Casarez (22-9, 10 KOs) to hit the canvas twice. The second time had a non responsive Casarez, as Cunningham improves to (40-9, 17 KOs).
Jarico O’Quinn showed power and speed against fellow bantamweight Christian Esquivel. O’Quinn balanced attack sent Esquivel through the ropes for a 2:56 2nd Round TKO. O’Quinn improves to (10-0-1, 7 KOs), as former World title challenger Esquivel fell to (30-16-1, 23 KOs).
Heavyweight Armonte Summers (1-0) defeated Henry Wright Jr (0-3) by UD (39-36, 39-36, 39-36).
Middleweight Cedric Whyckoff (2-0, 2 KOs) defeated Jonathan Morgan (0-1) by TKO at 4 second mark of the 4th Round. Morgan stayed on his stool, as the time keeper started the round, forcing Regeree Sam Williams to call the fight.
In the night’s opener, Raymond Castaneda (4-0, 2 KOs) won his lightweight contest over Allen Torres (0-4) by a UD (40-36, 40-36, 40-36).
The Night of Knockouts XIV was promoted by Carlos Llinas and matched by Carlos Llinas and Aaron Rodriguez . The series continued an impressive streak of sellout and near sellout crowds by Motor City Casino and Hotel at Soundboard.
