German super middleweight Tyron Zeuge has his eye on a bit of national history.
If Zeuge defeats world titleholder Giovanni De Carolis on Saturday at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, he will become the youngest German fighter to win a world title.
Zeuge (18-0, 10 KOs) would break the record by eight days. It is held by Graciano Rocchigiani, who was 24 years and 73 days when he knocked out Vincent Boulware in the eighth round to also win a super middleweight world title in 1988.
“I’m not nervous,” Zeuge said. “I know there is a lot at stake, but I will approach this fight the same way I do every fight. I will not let anything affect my focus. I will concentrate on what I have to do in the ring, go in there and win the fight.
“Berlin is my city, and it’s always nice to fight at home. It will be a great feeling to have all my family and friends there supporting me and, hopefully, cheering me to victory. I look forward to celebrating with them all after the fight.”
In an unusual arrangement, Zeuge is trained by Juergen Braehmer, an active boxer who holds a secondary light heavyweight world title. Although Braehmer is busy with his own career, Zeuge said it has not gotten in the way of their training camp.
“Working with Juergen has been a real eye-opener for me,” Zeuge said. “He has shown me what it takes to make it to the top. My work rate and discipline has increased and I’ve never been better prepared. He is also very calm in the corner and I trust him to give me the right instructions in the ring. He is a world-class fighter and a world-class coach, and together we will make history.”
De Carolis (24-6, 12 KOs), 31, of Italy, will be making his first title defense. He won a secondary 168-pound belt Jan. 9 in Germany when he knocked out Vincent Feigenbutz in the 11th round in a rematch of a close decision loss to him in October.
Also on the card, former two-time super middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham, 36, of Germany, will fight for the first time since losing his world title in a woeful shutout decision loss to Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez on April 9 on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley Jr. III undercard in Las Vegas. Abraham (44-5, 29 KOs) will face Tim-Robin Lihaug (15-1, 8 KOs), 23, of Norway.
