Tyron Woodley plans to put on the performance of the night against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205.
Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is looking to make a statement at UFC 205.
After brutalising then-champ Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ is looking to accomplish a similar feat against Stephen Thompson in New York.
Woodley, 34, will defend the 170-pound belt against Wonderboy in the co-main event and, despite what many consider to be a tough stylistic matchup for the ATT fighter, Woodley plans to KO his opponent ‘stiff’ on Nov. 12.
“Stephen Thompson will be knocked out stiff at UFC 205. I will have the most memorable performance on the card,” Woodley said, per Chris Taylor of BJPenn.com
UFC 205 is the most stacked pay-per-view of all-time, featuring a who’s who of champions and top-level talent. A championship superfight between Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor will headline the event at Madison Square Garden.
Despite being champion, Woodley will enter UFC 205 against Thompson as the underdog, but the former Strikeforce competitor says he will have an answer for anything the karate expert throws at him.
“I do not really have a plan. I do not have something where I am going out there to outwrestle him or out-strike him,” Woodley said. “I just have got drills and techniques that will help put myself in a position where anything that comes I will have an answer for. I will just be going out there to do my thing and if he asks me a question I will give him an answer.”
Thompson, an undefeated kickboxer with just one loss on his MMA resume, has emerged as one of the most feared strikers in the sport. The 33-year-old has used his precision striking and stellar takedown defense to beat the likes of Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger.
UFC 205, which features Woodley vs. Thompson in the co-main event, takes place on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
