We’re halfway through the UFC 210: Cormier vs. Johnson 2 preliminary card in Buffalo, New York. There was some good action on display, culminating in a 21-second knockout win for New York’s own Gregor Gillespie. Here’s how the fights played out.

Gregor Gillespie def. Andrew Holbrook by TKO (punches) at :21 of round 1 – Lightweights

The undefeated former All-American wrestler starched Holbrook with a left hook and then landed a bunch of hammerfists for the finish. That’s all you need to know about this fight, because that was 95% of the entire contest. Gillespie gets his second UFC win in as many bouts, while Holbrook gets quickly disposed of for the second time in his last three outings.

Desmond Green def. Josh Emmett by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27) Lightweights

Both men were throwing with hard conviction in the opening round. Emmett loaded up on the right hand and did catch Green with a right-left combination. Green caught Emmett with a right hook that had the Team Alpha Male fighter noticeably buzzed. Takedowns were not attempted in the opening frame.

University of Buffalo alum Green was the decidedly better fighter in round two, showing off a great mix of strikes and stuffing Emmett’s takedowns. The jab kept Emmett at bay and he couldn’t land that right hand with regularity.

Emmett came out with a sense of urgency to start round three but found himself taken down in a moment of overaggression. After a failed leglock attempt, Emmett worked to escape from the bottom. Green’s output noticeably waned in the third. Emmett wasn’t landing much even though he was throwing more. Green peppered Emmett with the jab in the late stages and earned himself the split decision win in his Octagon debut. Emmett getting a scorecard in his favor was generous.

Katlyn Chookagian def. Irene Aldana by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) – Women’s Bantamweights

Round one was a closely contested striking battle. Aldana landed some hard punches in the early stages but Chookagian answered with jabs and a bevy of kicks that kept Aldana out of punching range. Chookagian had a late takedown before the round ended but couldn’t complete it.

Aldana started round two strongly by landing shots and getting past Chookagian’s kicking range. The Mexican was also scoring with her inside leg kicks. She was stinging Chookagian with beautiful counterpunching, pumping out the straight right hand regularly. Chookagian was throwing more than Aldana but wasn’t necessarily landing the harder shots in the middle phase of this well-matched fight.

Chookagian turned up the pressured in the final round, continuing to throw and score with those kicks. Aldana kept her forward movement going and connected on some power punches. Chookagian also was unable to take her down despite multiple efforts throughout the fight. Katlyn piled up the leg and body kicks. Aldana caught Chookagian with the right hand multiple times over, along with an uppercut. It was a high-paced battle, but Chookagian nicked it on two of the three judges’ scorecards. Aldana is now 0-2 in the UFC, while Chookagian is 2-1.

Magomed Bibulatov def. Jenel Lausa by unanimous decision (29-26 x3) – Flyweights

Bibulatov started off with spinning attacks before going for a takedown. Lausa defended it but ate two knees for his troubles in the clinch. The UFC newcomer avoided Lausa’s power right hand, which is really what he was predominantly throwing. Bibulatov threw and scored with a hard right hand before kneeing Lausa in the groin, which caused a brief stoppage in the bout. Bibulatov continued his spinning attacks and was finding his range, while Lausa struggled with his accuracy. Magomed kneed Lausa just as the horn sounded to end round 1.

Bibulatov kept mixing up his strikes, throwing superman punches and spinning back kicks. A good ol’ fashioned uppercut snapped Lausa’s head back. Bibulatov groin kicked Lausa, marking his second groin strike in the fight. John McCarthy immediately deducted a point for that one. Bibulatov took Lausa down after the restart and went to work with ground-and-pound for the rest of the second round.

Bibulatov slammed Lausa down to start the final round and immediately got into side control. He rained down some elbows before Lausa was able to get full guard. Lausa tried to escape in a scramble but wound up mounted. He gained half-guard but otherwise spent all of round three outgrappled and just thoroughly dominated. Bibulatov improves to 14-0 in his MMA career while Lausa suffers his first UFC loss.
