The UFC 218 Fight Pass preliminary card is in the books, and the Octagon’s return to Detroit, Michigan has gotten off to a hot start. Justin Willis kicked things off with a KO of Allen Crowder, Dominick Reyes submitted Jeremy Kimball to remain undefeated in his pro career, Abdul Razak Alhassan and Sabah Homasi had a thrilling one-round battle marred by questionable refereeing, and Amanda Cooper stopped Angela Magana in dominant fashion in front of her home fans. Here’s how the fights played out.

Amanda Cooper def. Angela Magana by TKO (punches) at 4:34 of round 2 – Women’s Strawweights

After a good start for Magana on the feet, Michigan-native Cooper changed levels and sought the takedown, but Magana stopped it with a blatant fence grab. Later in the round, Magana’s head-and-arm throw proved disastrous, as Cooper wound up on top and in full mount. Magana gained full guard after taking some ground strikes. After a brief stoppage so that Magana could readjust her bra, Cooper dominated the rest of round 1, slamming home heavy ground-and-pound and threatening with the rear-naked choke. Magana survived the onslaught but clearly dropped the opening frame.

Cooper stung Magana with a left high kick and then took her down immediately to start round 2. “ABC” advanced from full guard to half-guard, then side control, where she dropped some elbows down on Magana’s face. Cooper got to back mount, searched for the rear-naked choke, but was unable to get it underneath the chin. Magana was physically inferior and losing the grappling exchanges handily. It was a one-sided beating and Magana was just in total survival mode. More ground-and-pound pummeled Magana without reply, and the referee warned Magana to fight back. The strikes kept coming, and Keith Peterson had seen enough. Total domination by Amanda Cooper to move to 3-3 in her MMA career, while Magana’s first fight since 2014 ends in her fifth straight defeat.

Abdul Razak Alhassan def. Sabah Homasi by TKO (punches) at 4:21 of round 1 – Welterweights

Homasi and Alhassan both clipped each other with big punches within the first sixty seconds. A right hand and an uppercut clocked Homasi, and it appeared to be early trouble for Sabah. Homasi did well to land a hard knee to the body at the end of the clinch, and he buckled Alhassan with rights over the top. Alhassan was taken down and ate some ferocious elbows, but the Ghanaian sprung back to his feet. Most of Alhassan’s punches were windmill shots looking to tear the head off of his opponent. Homasi was more economical with his strike selection, particularly with the knees to the body. They swung away against the fence like crazy, then Homasi got dropped with a right hand. Homasi went for a takedown and Herb Dean stopped the fight, assuming that Homasi was out cold. An absolutely terrible stoppage and an unsatisfying end to a fun fight.

Dominick Reyes def. Jeremy Kimball by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:39 of round 1 – Light Heavyweights

Kimball tagged Reyes with a punch and swarmed him early, then Reyes countered with a guillotine, but Kimball slammed Reyes down to avoid the choke. The heavily-favored Reyes thwarted Kimball’s takedown attempt, turned him against the fence and then took Kimball down into side control. Kimball got to full guard but ate some ground-and-pound in the process. Reyes took the back and secured a body triangle, elbowing and hammerfisting Kimball’s head, some of which prompted warning for striking the back of the head. After all of the relentless ground striking, Reyes got the rear-naked choke locked in and Kimball tapped. Reyes is known for his knockouts, but he improved to 2-0 in the UFC by way of submission.

Justin Willis def. Allen Crowder by KO (punches) at 2:33 of round 1 – Heavyweights

Willis spammed left hands in the opening minute off of a caught Crowder kick. He also fired off some effective Muay Thai knees in the clinch and had the better offense in the early stages. When Willis let his hands go, he was scoring with some hard power punches upstairs. A ferocious left hand rocked Crowder and sent him backwards. After a failed knee and a missed wild right hand, Willis landed another left hand and Crowder went to sleep. A very impressive win for Willis, who picked up the first finish of his UFC career.
