Ben Nguyen is looking to make his name in the UFC flyweight division. But veteran Jussier Formiga wasn’t about to let it happen on his watch.
Formiga dropped Nguyen with a wicked spinning back fist in the third round of their battle of ranked 125ers Saturday at UFC 221, then finished it soon thereafter with a rear-naked choke. The time of the stoppage in Perth, Western Australia was 1:43.
The bout’s opening two rounds told similar stories. The Brisbane, Australia-based Nguyen had his moments, in particular landing solid stikes. But Formiga always had an answer, and he outwrestled and outgrappled his foe in both rounds.
Perhaps sensing he needed a finish, Nguyen opened things up in the final round, but he left himself open for the backfist which landed flush. When Nguyen was trapped in the choke, he went out rather than tap.
Formiga improved to 21-5. He’s won two straight, three of four and six of his past eight.
“I have six years in UFC, all the time I’ve had tough fights in the UFC,” Formiga said. “Dana White, I want my shot, please.”
Nguyen dropped to 18-7. All of his career losses have been via finish.
