UFC-bound Sabina Mazo discusses new chapter in MMA career

Sabina Mazo is taking a big step in her fighting career.

The Colombian fighter recently signed a four-fight deal with the UFC. Mazo, whose debut is still yet to be determined, joins the organization as the LFA women’s flyweight champion. She sports an undefeated record of 6-0 that includes two viral head-kick knockout wins.

Despite already having made some waves in the MMA world, Mazo is still a 21-year-old college student that has only been fighting professionally for less than four years. Things in MMA may be moving quite fast for the Kings MMA product, but that doesn’t mean she’s not ready for the bright lights.

“Everything has been happening very quick and I haven’t even rushed anything,” Mazo said speaking with MMA Fighting. “Everything has been done step by step. It wasn’t like, ‘oh, I need to go to the UFC now.’ Actually, a lot of people used to tell me, ‘why don’t you go now,’ but I wanted to defend my title and take my time.

“I know I’m young and everything but talent and discipline can make up for experience. I’m a dedicated person with everything that I do and that gives results, that’s why everything has happened so quick. So I haven’t rushed anything despite everything happening so fast, I’ve taken my time.”

Mazo was contacted by the UFC last month following her first LFA title defense. She believes this to be the perfect moment for her UFC career to kick off.

“I was already thinking about the UFC and I thought it was the right moment,” Mazo said. “It was hard to get fights for my title defense, last time the girl got injured like three days before the fight, so I was already thinking it. My manager and my whole team thought it made sense, so even though I’m young, I don’t feel like I’m rushing it, so I do think this is coming at good timing. And why not, if I feel confident.”

Apart from this being personally and athletically a good time for Mazo to join the UFC roster, she also believes outside reasons are working in her favor.

“I think it’s great that this division is just starting, because in some way, it’s easier to make history – obviously [the division] being so new rather than something that’s already well established.

“So I think it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase my work. I do think there is a good level, I findValentina Shevchenko to be an excellent fighter, same with Joanna Jedrzejczyk, although I’m not too sure if she’ll stay, and the other girls are good too. I think it’s a division that will show a lot of exciting fights. It’s a very new division, but a lot is going to come out of it.”

Mazo is looking to make her debut sometime in March and she’s willing to take on anyone the UFC puts in front of her.

Joining the UFC is a dream come true for the undefeated fighter, it’s also an achievement for Colombia with Mazo being the first female Colombian athlete to join the company.

“It’s a very important achievement for female athletics because in Colombia we’ve had a lot of female talents, we have a significant number in women athletes, so I’m happy to be part of that circle and show that it’s possible, so for me it’s very important. It’s important for the country and female sports.”
