Even before winning the UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic two weeks ago, UFC double champion Daniel Cormier had already been adamant about retiring by his 40th birthday in March 2019. But before riding off into the sunset, he plans to fight Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones, in no particular order.
If things were to go as planned for him, “DC” will be fighting late in the year, then sometime in early 2019. But as for his swan song, the 39-year-old Cormier has already declared that it would be against Lesnar.
“He’ll be the last one. He’ll be the last fight of my career,” Cormier said (via MMANYTT). “Will he be next? I don’t know. I hope so but I’ve still got a belt to defend at 205 [pounds] to think about.”
Lesnar’s fighting future remains uncertain, but according to USADA, the ex-WWE star would beeligible for competition after January 8th, 2019, when his one-year suspension for failing hisUFC 200 drug tests will lapse. Cormier, on the other hand, is simply looking forward to whomever he will be facing next.
“I would prepare myself to win and to defend the title,” Cormier said. “Any time you’re in a UFC title fight it’s a big deal and for anybody to say they didn’t get up for it is crazy.”
“You’re a professional. You’re a fighter. You have to get up for these events.”
As for his light heavyweight title, Cormier says he wants to defend it against Mauricio Rua, next. However, the likes of Ilir Latifi and Yoel Romero have also been calling for their own title shots at 205 pounds.
