For the first time since 2009, the UFC will be staging an event in Oregon’s largest city, as UFC Fight Night heads to Portland to kick off October.
It’s been a long time since the UFC’s first trip to Portland, Oregon. In fact, the entire UFC 102 main card bar Nate Marquardt (who probably should be gone by now) and Demian Maia is no longer in the UFC. Well for MMA fans in the Rose City, the Octagon will be returning to Portland after a seven-year absence. The UFC announced a Fox Sports 1 event for the Moda Center (formerly the Rose Garden) on Saturday, October 1st. No fights announcements were made, but they’ll be made within the next few weeks.
UFC 102 drew in more than 16,000 fans and a $1.92 million gate for a non-title fight main event headlined by Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. That fight ended in a Nogueira decision win. The co-main event saw Thiago Silva demolish Keith Jardine fairly quickly.
If you’re keeping score, this means the UFC’s Saturday schedule now looks like this from next week to mid-October:
July 30th – UFC 201: Lawler vs. Woodley
August 6th – UFC Fight Night: Caceres vs. Rodriguez
August 20th – UFC 202: Diaz vs. McGregor
August 27th – UFC on FOX 21: Condit vs. Maia
September 3rd – UFC Fight Night: Arlovski vs. Barnett
September 10th – UFC 203: Miocic vs. Overeem
September 17th – UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Johnson
September 24th – UFC Fight Night: TBA
October 1st – UFC Fight Night: Portland
October 15th – UFC Fight Night: Manila
August 13th and October 8th are the only Saturdays without a UFC event starting over the next few months. I hope you’ve carved out roughly 60 hours worth of your weekend time from the remainder of this summer until the beginning of autumn.
