The UFC is going to stack UFC 229 with as many big fights as possible, and at least in a literal sense, they don’t come much bigger than a battle of top heavyweights. According to ESPN, who spoke to UFC president Dana White, the promotion is close to adding a bout between Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov to the October 6th card in Las Vegas.
Lewis (20-5, 1 NC, 11-3 UFC) is coming off of a completely enthralling win over Francis Ngannou which moved him to the number two contender spot in the heavyweight division.
Volkov (30-6, 4-0 UFC) stopped former champion Fabricio Werdum in his last bout and is undefeated in the UFC so far. He is currently the number five contender.
Last week, Volkov politely called out Lewis for a fight at UFC Moscow, citing the fact that everyone above him but Lewis was booked or not looking to take a fight at the moment. Lewis offered up a humorous response to that, and told him to “come to the USA”.
It seems that Volkov has indeed decided to do that.
UFC 229 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and the returning Conor McGregor.
